    book excerpt

Witnessing methods that just don’t work and why This chapter is probably the most important information a Christian can have in order to adequately understand the closed mind of a Jehovah’s Witness. I know there are many Christians who not only want to give a proper defense of the Gospel, but also want to extend spiritual help, spiritual help that leads to salvation and eternal life. Too often, though, Christians get angry, frustrated, and disheartened because every avenue that is taken seems to meet a rebuttal or refusal of some kind. Nothing seems to work. Here are a few meth- ods Christians have used that just don’t work and why. Religious Handouts /Literature Have you ever tried to give Christian literature of some type to a Jehovah’s Witness? Or have you told them you will take their material if they take yours? If you have, you know ? rst- hand that they refuse it. But why? Their ? rst response to you may be they don’t need it. 61 ruth baker While J.W.s do believe that they have the only true belief, it goes much deeper than that. Once again, it is fear grounded in their false doctrine. Let me explain since I’ve been there and done that. Jehovah’s Witnesses have a well-developed doctrine based on Babylon the Great as recorded in Revelation 14: 8 and Revelation 17. They teach that Babylon the Great, the harlot who sits on a many-headed, scarlet colored beast, is Satan’s worldwide organization of false religion. This empire of false religion has adulterated herself with governments and the world in general. It is full of false worship, idolatry, idolatrous symbols, and demons. But who or what constitutes Babylon the Great in their reality? You may have guessed it already: Every religious belief and denomination in the world with the exception of Jehovah’s Witnesses, whether it is Christian or non-Christian. It then extends to include each person belonging to these so-called false religions. Therefore, when one of them comes to your door and you say you have your own belief and church, they instantly and subconsciously identify you with Babylon the Great- with Satan’s organization. In their strong conviction, that also means your literature is Satan’s vehicle to promote false religious teachings. So, this is the way it goes. They will preach to you because of Jesus’ command to go into the world and make disciples. They also feel that placing the written word through their literature will open the door of setting you free from Satan’s clutch. However, they will not take any of your material because they have been thoroughly programmed not to take any religious material. To do so would leave them open to possible delusion and demonic attack. It would be a rare occurrence for any one of them to even touch it because it would make them guilty by association and transfer. Let 62 knock, knock me recap the following main points for clarity, just in case I haven’t explained it clearly enough along the way: 1. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that all belief and religious systems except theirs is Satan’s reli- gious empire, Babylon the Great. 2. All people who believe in any religion but theirs are in spiritual darkness and under Satan’s control. 3. All religious materials, symbols, rites, etc., are satanic. 4. For any J.W. to take part in any way, e.g., taking religious publications, puts them in danger of possibly falling prey to Satan. 5. They are endangering their eternal life by tak- ing material because it opens them up to aban- doning God’s true religion and organization, which leads to separation from Jehovah. If this happens, then it results in bringing God’s wrath and eternal destruction upon them at Armageddon. Consequently, the efforts of many well-intentioned peo- ple who write up pamphlets, books, etc., to give J.W.s at the door are usually in vain. I’m not accusing anyone of trying to scam Christians. It’s just that most people do not understand why a Witness will not take the literature regardless of what it may be-whether it is free or you take their literature. The truth is plain and simple-Jehovah’s Witnesses simply will not take them because they perceive them as a potential satanic foothold. 63 ruth baker Personal Testimonies Let me say ? rst of all, that personal testimony of God’s work in anyone’s life is powerful. Essentially, experience is greater than any other type of argument that can be made. It brings glory to God by showing how His mercy, power, and grace have worked and are still working. I’m not advocating that personal testimonies are useless. I do not aspire to stand in the place of God. You must let personal prayer and the Holy Spirit be your guide. Testimonies, nevertheless, are greatly ineffective with Jehovah’s Witnesses as a whole. Why? Again, their mind is almost totally closed when you speak of supernatural experiences. This condition also stems from a deeply ingrained false doctrine regarding the Holy Spirit. Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that the Holy Spirit is not a person or being of any kind. Rather, they claim the Spirit is God’s power that God pours out upon whomever and when- ever He desires. They explain God’s power, or to use their phrase “God’s active force,” as a force such as lightning or electricity. It comes and it goes, but never stays in one place and is never in all places at the same time. Thus He created, anointed, destroyed, led, and gave inspiration by this force. I could go into many details about their rejection of the Trinity doctrine, which is at the bottom of this doc- trine. However, I must keep this section simple and to the point: What is really behind their rejection of your personal testimony? Jehovah
