THE BREAD OF ANGELS


Exodus 16:31 (NIV)

The people of Israel called the bread manna. It was white like coriander seed and tasted like wafers made with honey.

Psalm 78:21-25 (NIV)

When the LORD heard them, he was very angry; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel, for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens; he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven. Men ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.

Have you ever been in a situation where you felt hopeless? Perhaps your only car broke down and you had no money to fix it or buy another. Or maybe you were laid off from your job and your family depended on your income for survival. I could go on and on to describe situations such as these where the circumstances of our lives could seem desperate. Thanks be to God that He holds all power in His hands.

While wandering in the wilderness, I believe that the people of Israel also felt this sense of desperation. Think about it for a minute. What would it feel like to wander in a wilderness place? I can imagine feeling lost and longing for what is familiar. I can also imagine that I would wonder how I would survive. In His divine goodness, God miraculously provided the Israelites with food for forty years. The Israelites called this food manna, which means "what is it?"

Just as manna appeared with the morning dew, God provides us with fresh blessings daily. God can open the doors of heaven and rain down blessings to provide for our needs. Indeed, God is so good that he enabled mere men to eat the bread of angels.

In this day and age, "manna" for us may not be food. Our "manna" could be whatever it is that we are in need of. God cares for us and desires to take care of our needs. Nothing is impossible for God and He has no boundaries. Just as God wonderfully gave manna to the Israelites while they were in the wilderness, when we find ourselves in wilderness places, by faith, we Christians can expect God’s perfect provision to meet our needs.
