    CHAPTER 1 February, 1968 Gabe awoke with a start. Glancing out his bedroom window of his family’s Little River, Washington home, the moon’s height told him he hadn’t been asleep long. Several nights in a row that same dream brought him from sound sleep to wide awake, leaving him with the recurring feeling of almost being able to grasp something just out of his reach. Gabe ran his hands through his short sandy hair. He stretched his six foot frame out on the bed and tried to relax. Dreams were not a common occurrence for Gabe. Usually he had no trouble resting and enjoying uninterrupted sleep. But not this week. A girl’s hand with long, slender, light-brown fingers reached out towards him. Straight, glossy black hair trailed behind an unseen face. The girl was running, giggling, urging him to follow her. Her laughter and out-stretched hand beckoned Gabe. He could see his own hand reaching for hers, reaching, trying to grasp her hand, but not able to touch her. Her giggles continued, then were suddenly cut short by a sharp, loud crack, like the sound of a gun, then the blood-curdling scream. Gabe tried to grab the hand but missed as he saw the faceless girl tumble down a black abyss, screaming, her hand still grasping for his….
