Chapter Three
Signs of Cover-Up
When I was a small boy in Texas, I used to watch and catch crayfish in shallow water. Crayfish are little water creatures that look like small lobsters. To get away from a predator (such as a little boy), a crayfish will drag its pinchers forward like a swimming backstroke, muddying the water where it sits, and then dash quickly in a new direction, confusing its pursuer. What the predator sees is a cloud of muddy water instead of the crayfish.
This is an apt picture of what people will do when you try to comfort/counsel them. They "muddy the waters" with their cover-ups and dart off in some different direction. An efficient symptom watcher will be able to recognize the distressed person's "crayfishing."
The following five classifications are human responses that people use in crayfishing and are signs of cover-up:
Displaced attention
Jockeying for sympathy
Smoke-screen devices
Lying outright
Guilt reactions
