Remember People, Jesus Loves You Each day precisely two stops before she gets off the public bus, she stands up and says, “Remember people, Jesus loves you. May the love of Jesus shine in your hearts and in your lives today.” The deep silence of a collective inward groan of the other passengers is palpable. Even I who call myself a Christian sigh. Is she a mentally ill person that forgot to take her anti-psychotic drugs, I’ve heard myself ask, or just eccentric? She’s a crazy old lady, I’ve thought. In the middle of my ruminating about the interruption of my complacency, she stands up again. The bus has reached her destination, but before she exits, she makes one last passionate proclamation. “Remember people,” she says, “The victory does not lie in nations or people or even your family. It’s in Christ Jesus.” Then it hit me one day. As often as I’d heard her say those things, it occurred to me that maybe, just maybe she’s walking in the boldness I’ve prayed for. Maybe she’s responding to the admonition of Jude to snatch some from the fire. Maybe, just maybe she’s the one I’ve prayed for God to send to provoke me to love and good works. The next time she stands up, I hope I have the courage to say, “Thank you, Sister, for being an example of His love.” Remember people; she could be an angel unaware.
