    book excerpt

I’d always thought that those elusive things like love, joy, peace, a purpose for being were the greater things in life. Nice sentiments, sure, but how do you put your hands on them? I wanted to live them, not just long for them. I didn’t want to merely hear about a God that could change lives, I yearned to see it. As it turned out, I didn’t have too long to wait. The second home fellowship I went to was in a home in Wallingford, Connecticut. We all sat in a large living room. Including Anne and myself there were probably no more than ten people. A young guy, of about nineteen years old, taught that evening about the goodness of God. I don’t remember the specifics of the teaching, but one thing I will never forget was seeing a demonstration of the goodness of God that was manifested right before my own eyes. There was a teenage boy sitting in on the fellowship with us. His feet were badly twisted and I’d seen him limping when he’d first entered the room. He could barely walk. After the fellowship was over he had gotten up and gone into another room with the same young guy who had taught the fellowship. I was sitting on the floor, listening to a couple I’d just met, as they were telling me about God’s Word. We could hear the teacher in the next room talking to this guy with the twisted feet. Next we heard him praying for this kid to be healed in the name of Jesus Christ. Then we heard him yelling “You can do it! You can do it!” So here it comes – God’s goodness! The door swung open and this guy took off like a shot! He went running past us, and out the side door of the house. Then he kept right on running up and down the driveway. He finally marched back into the house. There were tears rolling down his face. Man, the guy had been healed! His feet were as straight as mine!
