“Of course I know that God loves me!” I was indignant when my mentor asked, “Do you know that God loves you ? I know you know this in your head, but has it reached into your heart?” Her timing was perfect. She asked this simple question when my life was so complicated. I did not know how desperately I needed to believe the truth that God loves me. Still, her question offended me. After all, who did she think she was talking to? I was a knowledgable Bible teacher: of course I knew God loved me! She prayed with me, “Lord, let her know that You love her. So cuddle her in Your love that she cannot resist you.” I did not understand her prayer, but I felt its effects. The following week I had an experience that I still do not understand. I can understand what Paul meant in 2 Corinthians 12:3 when he said, “whether it was a dream or not, I do not know. “ I do know is that for the first time in 20 years as a Christian, I really believed that God loved ME. I realized that He had a special relationship with me that no one else had (as He does with every believer). Forgive my familiarity, but there is only one way to explain what He did in my heart that week. He courted and wooed me as a man would do to win a wife. God ultimately demonstrated this love for me at calvary and at the altar of a small Baptist church. Yet, I fell for Him all over again. His tender love got real personal.
