How Nimrod rose to great power and drew to himself a great people, and so to hunt down those who were living before the Lord (Bible exposition).
And so let's take a look at this mysterious and elusive character Nimrod (Genesis 10:8). An entertained view among profane writers and historians alike is that he is a composite of real and mythical figures belonging to that prehistoric world, especially when thought of as Ninus. And yet partly they might have some truth in their words, for we have already understood that names in the listings are also families, the name standing for the individual and for the individual's many offspring. Among profane and sacred writers alike Nimrod is generally placed within one of two premises, either he was an extraordinary, godly winner of men to himself in an idolatrous world or an extraordinarily wicked winner of men to himself in a godly place¹. The latter premise being the more favoured. And to be sure, that post-diluvial world was extremely idolatrous. The reason why Nimrod is deemed a winner of men, and an extraordinary one at that, is from the accolade attributed to him of being a mighty hunter before the Lord: Genesis 10:9 He [Nimrod] was a mighty hunter before the LORD...
