    book excerpt

Life Began in a Garden On the third day of creation, God planted a garden simply by speaking it into existence: “Let the land produce vegetation, seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds” (Genesis 1:11 NIV).The Bible says, “it was so … and God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:11a-12b ESV). On the sixth day, He created the first gardener, Adam. Just as amazingly as He had created the world and all its creatures, He created man from the garden soil itself and charged him to tend it as well as to rule over all the creatures on land and sea. So life began on earth in a garden, and the seasonal cycle instilled in Eden has continued according to the plan of the Master Gardener—Creator God. Since the beginning of time on earth, the sequence has continued. Birth, flowering, fruit-bearing, and regeneration occur in natural succession in plants, animals, and humans alike. The seeds of plants and the progeny of animals are legacies to the cycle; yet the gardener is the only creature made in the image of the Creator with a will to freely choose how to govern the earth-garden. The heart of a gardener resides within all people—the need to procreate, to nurture, and to produce. In addition, the parallels to the seasons of nature and the life of humankind are many. Each seasonal cycle is full of all the gardener experiences in life—blessing, struggle, growth, fruit-bearing, rest—not only in our flesh but in our spirit as well. The garden is replete with lessons for all of us as the seasons pass. If we look carefully for them and glean their truths, we will experience a joyful harvest. If we are wise, we will replenish the garden by planting legacy seeds of what we’ve learned for our children and for those who follow us to continue the cycle.
