book excerpt
1840 England
In the summer of her 12th year, Sarah Blake is taken from her home in England to be an indentured servant to a heartless master and mistress in America. Six years into her eight-year term, an unknown cousin, Grayson Attwood, appears, offering to pay for her last two years as a servant and return her to England. However, Grayson has ulterior motives and is desperate to keep Sarah from finding out the true reason he has rescued her.
Grayson and Sarah grow closer as they travel the high seas. Sarah appreciates Grayson’s ability to handle any situation that arises. She feels protected, and even cared for, something she hasn’t felt in a long time. Grayson admires Sarah’s ability to face the challenge of an unknown future and is inspired by her constant confidence in God even after all she has been through.
However, although Sarah may be content with only her one baggy dress and two old skirts, Grayson is not. He simply cannot return to England with Sarah looking the way she does. When the ship stops in Boston, he has a friend buy all the right clothes for her. But will the new clothes be enough to make his wealthy, high-society friends accept her? Especially Lydia. Beautiful Lydia, waiting eagerly for his return.
When Grayson comes home one day to find that Sarah is gone, he is desperate. Things have been going so well. She has made friends. She and he have been getting closer. Why would she leave? Where would she go? How can he find her, and will she ever come back if he does?
