    book excerpt

We read about them in books, see special documentaries about them on television, and explore them when visiting foreign lands. But, what, really, makes a temple special, intriguing, or even significant? We understand that they offer a concrete location where humans can feel a connection to their god, but what, exactly, are we hoping to find that can’t be found elsewhere? And what differentiates a Christian temple from that of any other religion? By exploring the Word of God, we will come to a better understanding of the temple through the ways in which God uses it. After all, if the temple truly is our connection to God, then we must understand how we are connected in order to fully appreciate and respect the temple itself. Solomon’s temple was the first temple built for the Lord; and the prayer that Solomon prayed to consecrate and anoint the temple establishes the nature of all temples. We can learn from King Solomon what we can expect from God concerning His holy house.... Years later, as Jesus walked the earth and brought us under the New Covenant, He referred to Himself as “the temple.”... With His Spirit living inside of us, God can now operate through us as He did through the temple building itself and through Christ! Now, others should be able to come to us and find God’s mercy, love, etc. We are, as Jesus taught, lights in the darkness. Everywhere we go, others are brought in direct contact with the Spirit of God through us. Living by the example of Christ, we can have a profound impact on those around us....
